Nizara: Nicobar X November
November was commissioned by the New Delhi-based homeware and fashion brand Nicobar to create a capsule collection of our choice. Each collection by Nicobar is geographically informed (based on traditional styles and methods of chosen places). We envisioned a collection from an imagined geography, inspired by the Indian folk tradition of using Magical Realism as a creative device. We created Nizara as a lost coastal land in India that had its own civilisation, flora/fauna, and artefacts.
We designed a new eponymous writing system (asemic) — in essence, a new script/language, complete with a typeface in multiple weights. Animal forms, pattern libraries, and objects were then designed. We looked to lost Indian scripts like Harappan and Brahmi for inspiration and gave the Nizara script all the features of real writing systems: vowels, consonants, matras (diacritics), conjuncts, and punctuation. Nizara is set at the crossroads of reality and fantasy, familiarity and oddity, history and a parallel world.
