GT America Devanagari
Grilli Type reached out to November for the creative direction of the Devanagari companion to GT America. Nöel Leu’s design combines qualities of American Gothics and European Grotesks to create an affable, highly readable workhorse. These genre conventions are unfamiliar to Devanagari, so designer Hitesh “Rocky” Malaviya focused on adapting the “feeling” of the original. GT America’s high contrast, loose spacing, and core details served as a foundation for exploring a new Devanagari design that captures the essence of the original while functioning effectively in a new context. GT America Devanagari avoids overly simplified letterforms, preserving the script’s warmth and natural feel, ensuring it does not become cold or artificial. The character of the typeface evolves more than usual as the letters get heavier, so each weight is tailored to its intended size and usage. While Ultra Light evokes solitude and structure, Black carries a more pronounced personality.
GT America Devanagari was published by Grilli Type in 2023 and is part of the broader multiscript expansion of the original typeface. Creative direction by November and Grilli Type.
