Graphik Bangla
Commercial Type commissioned November to create the Indic companion to Christian Schwartz’s influential Graphik. Designed by Arya Purohit, Graphik Bangla is an attempt at creating the “perfect” default monolinear Bangla typeface. The family was designed to be a Bangla equivalent rather than a simple collection of repeated shapes. The great challenge in Bangla was adapting the highly calligraphic script to the neutral-ish, monolinear environment of Graphik while matching form, texture, and the Latin’s characteristic warmth.
Graphik Bangla achieves this by retaining ball terminals (which are inherent to the Bangla script) that are usually removed in sans-based designs. In that sense, Graphik Bangla blends classic and modern genres to achieve ‘Graphik-ness,’ while weight distribution and optical correction do the heavy lifting in creating a smooth texture and high readability. Bangla type design veteran Jyotish Sonowal provided key guidance during the design process.
Graphik Bangla is part of the larger Graphik Indic project that includes Graphik Devanagari and Graphik Tamil,
