Panther’s Paw Publications
Panther’s Paw Publications is a Nagpur-based radical publisher of anti-caste narratives and Bahujan authors. Following in a long legacy of Ambedkarite publishing, PPP seeks to create a space for new Bahujan authors and translations of older, iconic works into the English language. We have been working with founder Yogesh Maitreya since 2020 on various aspects of the brand’s communication design.
The visual identity is based on early sketches of Paul Renner’s Futura, utilising some of the rejected letterforms (a, r) and further rendering the lettering in a Slab Serif style. Throughout the collaboration, we created several icons, graphic symbols, and marks for books, posters, and announcements. We see the PPP identity as a growing, organic project with space for modulations and change over time.
Owing to PPP’s roots in a history of resistance, we designed every book cover as a poster, emphasising graphic impact and visual power. The covers are most often typographic, simple, and utilising minimal colour. We also designed the typographic system for the books themselves, setting standards for type palettes, hierarchies, and typesetting.

Singing/Thinking Anti-Caste
An expansion of the author’s PhD dissertation at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), the book chronicles the history of Anti-caste music in India. The cover attempts to convey the urgency, resilience and utopian appeal of Anti-Caste narratives and references the DIY-ethic inherent in the movement through our use of linocut. Each chapter opener features linocut illustration of the subjects and the book is typeset in early versions of two of our typefaces: TM (display) and Delegate (captions and footnotes).
Ambedkar 2021
Ambedkar 2021 compiles 21 essays exploring various facets of B.R. Ambedkar’s influence in the contemporary political landscape. For the book’s visual language, we used the ubiquitous portrait of Ambedkar, that has gained mythic cultural influence, as the central element and created 21 versions of it, each reflecting the themes of the essays. The cover is decidedly word-less, making the book yet another version of the portrait.
Various Covers
PPP primarily publishes non-fiction but also poetry collections, fiction, cultural critique and translations of iconic Bahujan works in English. The visual system for the covers was to design them as posters that work as well in large formats, their intended book size, as well as on social media and online retailer sites.
Collected Works Series
The latest series from PPP attempts to compile B.R. Ambedkar’s major works (essays, speeches, critique) into a concise series. The cover system uses a variable system that differentiates it from other books in the PPP canon. Two books have been published with eight more in the works.
